This is one of the areas you’ll wander in when you are already level 90. Most of the players are going to hit the level cap before venturing into this area, and after I saw it myself I can understand why.

If Townlong Steppes was already infested with some mantids, the Dread Wastes can be considered the lair of those insects.
The area is filled with mantid buildings, and if you are at the great wall on the east, that protects the rest of the Pandaria areas from an imminent invasion, you’ll see huge armies of mantids trying to break through.

At first, while questing, you’ll have to help various pandareans on their fight against mantids. This was pretty obvious and for those coming into this area from Townlong Steppes is no surprise.
There is something interesting though…  Apparently mantids are affected by the Sha, like most of the creatures around Pandaria. This is one of the reasons they are trying to leave their homeland and you’ll even find a few friends among these beasts.
The Klaxxi is a mantid faction. The elders of the mantids to be precise, and they are trying to work with pandareans and other races to restore their Queen glory and save their land from the Sha infestation. The Heart of Fear is a new raid that resides within this area and this is where you’ll find the mantid queen.

Something tells me that some might raiders are going to cleanse these lands sooner or later. We’ll see what rewards are in store for those who are going to help the mantids and the rest of Pandaria.
