Like I said, there are only 23 heroes available alt the moment. There are 5 free to play heroes and one more is added after level 7 you’ll have 6 heroes for free. These free-to-play heroes will change every week.
Of course you can buy all of them if you like, but in Alpha there is a $325 USD cap on all purchases during Technical Alpha and all your progress and purchases will reset on the next test phase. The money you send are going to be refunded, but only for US players. The EU players can not make any purchases at the moment, only with gold earned in game. The realm money market is not available for us yet.
Anyhow, the heroes can be bought with 2k ($3.99)-10k ($9.99) gold each. Skins are available for real money only and they are between $7.49 and $14.99. The Mounts are the same, cash only, and they cost between $9.99 and $19.99 (I’m still amazed by that rainbow unicorn). Remember that this is still Alpha, the prices may/will change.
The mounts and skins are not affecting the the gameplay and they are just to change the looks. Most of the models have colors as well but those are unlocked with quests.
So, let’s get back to our heroes. As you may know all the heroes are familiar images from all the Blizzard franchises like World of Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft. Each hero is pretty unique and is played different.
An awesome feature is the Try Hero one. Basically you can play any hero before buying it on a small map where you can test the abilities of that hero and its play style. Apparently you’ll always play against Arthas and you’ll have a companion as well. The setup is small, but is great to see and test a hero before spending your gold or cash on it.
The current classes/roles and heroes are:
- Assassins – Falstad, Illidan, Kerrigan, Nova, Raynor, Demon Hunter, Zeratul, Tychus
- Warriors – Arthas, Diablo, E.T.C., Muradin, Barbarian, Stitches, Tyrael
- Specialist – Abathur, Gazlowe, Sgt. Hammer, Witch Doctor
- Support – Malfurion, Tassadar, Tyrande, Uther
Leveling System and Gameplay
The leveling is completely different from other MOBA games I saw so far. You don’t have a hero level. The leveling is team-wide, so everyone in your team will level at the same time. It doesn’t matter who kills a specific hero or who farms the minions better. Beside that, there is no gold and no items on the map. While leveling you can only select between skills, and that’s it.
Some of you may consider this extremely easy and boring, and it might be so, but there something that this system is fixing: farming! Now players can actually focus on playing rather than focusing on killing blows.
Level 25 is the max level you can reach with a hero and skills and skill upgrades are not rewarded every level (there are not so many). The experience comes from everything: camps, minions, heroes, objectives, structures… Killing a higher level reward you with a bonus experience. That’s goes for both heroes and mercenaries.
Another interesting part is that towers have charges that are replenished periodically, but while pushing your enemy base it may happen to see a tower without ammo. Thee are also a few hero abilities that make those ammo run out faster.
