ArkInventory will combine any inventory-type window into custom, auto-sorted groupings. It can work for your bags, bank, guild bank, and even the gear your characters wear or your key ring.
As you can see, all my items are sorted into my groups, one for consumables, one for trade skill tools and mats, etc. The groups can also be custom labelled.
Another feature I LOVE is the search bar just below the top menus. Type any portion of an item name into the search bar, and all the items that do not have that term become greyed out making it very simple to locate items.
Guild windows are also sortable. By right clicking the icon for a tab, you can get a menu that allows access to other information such as the Log and Info.
At any time, you can swap to any inventory on your current character, or view the inventories of any character without swapping. Note, you can view the inventories remotely, but you cannot use or move the items without actually swapping to the character or going to your bank.

Like any good bag addon, it modifies item tooltips to show where you can find the item you're looking for. Note that ArkInventory breaks down where to find items by Character -> Bag/Bank and by Guild -> Bank Tab for easy locating.

Now, for the way you sort items. This is actually a very simple process. I found it took me a couple hours the day I installed it to set everything up, then a few more days to fine tune the groups and move items I missed, but once the addon is configured, everything is automatic.
To open "Edit Mode," you click the gear icon in the top corner. This is what edit mode looks like:
As you can see, every group gets its own button. Clicking that button opens a menu like this:
I realise the menu seems very large and daunting, but it's actually quite simple:
- The top "Name" option allows you set the label for the group.
- Sort Method determines how items in a group are sorted (I usually leave it set to Rarity>Category>Location>Name which will organize items by rarity first, then alphabetical after, which is very handy for sorting out grey items for vendor).
- Categories Assigned will show what basic categories you've assigned to a group. I clicked an empty group in the screenshot, so none are listed, but they will appear for an assigned group.
- Assignable Categories is where you do your basic sorting. You can see in System, you can choose categories such as Gems, Keys, Quest Items, etc. Clicking one of those categories will assign it to the group you clicked. The numbers next to the catagories remind you what group they're already assigned to (if you look in the bottom left, you'll see a gem in Group 5 as it shows on the menu)
- Bar options are self-explanatory. They let you empty a group, insert an empty group, remove a group or move it to another place.
The automatic categories are based on the Blizzard classification of items, so sometimes you'll get an item that doesn't quite belong in the category it's placed in. For this reason, ArkInventory allows you to custom assign an item to a different category, including custom categories you create yourself.
As you can see, I keep Frostweave Cloth assigned to my Trash category, but its default category (according to Blizzard) is Trade Goods -> Cloth. By using the Assignable Categories, I can move Frostweave Cloth to any of the default categories or to one of my Custom categories.
As an example of custome categories, I can set all my tabards to my custom Tabard category, which allows me to move them into their own group in my bank window, without moving the ENTIRE Equipment -> Soulbound category that Blizzard assigns tabards to.
