The Professor is part of an escort quest. When he is friendly, you can talk to him, take the quest and just don't escort him. You'll get the quest failed announcement. Eventually, he will respawn and be killable. I believe that he become attackable when someone else fails the escort as well, but I'm not 100% sure about that. I can confirm that I was able to pick up his quest while he was green, fail it, and was able to kill him afterward. (Was max hated with goblins at the time.)

Also, First Mate Nilzlix & Captain Steelgut do NOT give rep till exalted. They stop giving rep at 11999/12000 honored. Confirmed with personal experience.
