According to Blizzard’s Q2 2014 earnings call, the World of Warcraft subscribers number went down to 6.8 millions. 800k subscribers were lost since the previous quarter.
It’s not a big surprise in my opinion. Usually when a new expansion is getting close a lot of people are taking a break or they are playing some other games. I could see that behaviour when the previous expansions were announced as well. Most of the guilds are taking a break, and people start playing Hearthstone or Diablo 3 or any other games awaiting for the new expansion.
Here are some other facts presented in this press release:
- Most of the subscribers that were lost are from the Eastern countries.
- Hearthstone on iPad added millions of new players to Battle.net
- Diablo 3 and Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls sold about 20M copies.
- Warlords of Draenor was ordered by 1.5M people already.
In a few days we’ll know the release date for Warlords of Draenor and I’m pretty sure that a bunch of people will come back to experience the new expansion. We’ll see how the future reports about subscribers will look like…
